Making Changes to a Couple's Life Insurance Policy in 30 Days

Whether I’m working with a client to review their life insurance policies or a business owner to offer coverage for their employees, I work with so many different people in so many different situations. No two clients are ever the same, and that’s one of the things I love about what I do.

A few months ago, a woman from Camp Hill, PA contacted me. She wanted to look at the options on her husband’s existing term life insurance policy. The term policy was set to expire in 30 days, and if you don’t know, that’s a very short amount of time to put a new policy into place. However, I knew that if we could gather information quickly, I would be able to make something happen.

I sat down with the couple to talk about their needs, and the husband’s primary goal was to ensure that his wife would be taken care of after his passing.

We collectively determined that permanent life insurance would be the best fit. I took their information and ran illustrations during our meeting. After showing the clients all the possible options with dozens of carriers offering different policies, they chose a $50,000 policy that they could afford within their monthly budget.

We submitted the application electronically, medical records were ordered, and a telephone interview was conducted. Unfortunately, a week later, the underwriter reviewed all the information and made the determination that my client could not get coverage with that company due to his medical history and age. If he wanted coverage, premiums were going to be incredibly expensive.

I went back to my client with the bad news of being denied. We didn’t have much time, so we had to move fast to find another beneficial option. I consulted with my team, and after some discussion, we decided to look more in-depth at converting his existing term policy to a permanent universal life option.

Because of the underwriter’s conclusion, this was our best (and only) option to get coverage without the premium being outrageously high. We contacted his current carrier and were told his coverage amount would be decreased by ten thousand dollars and the premium would increase with the conversion. Even with these changes, it was still a good option.

Although we didn’t move forward with our original plan, we were able to work together to find a solution that the couple was happy with. The carrier and I worked closely together to ensure everything went smoothly, the conversion was completed quickly, and that there was no lapse in coverage.

I make sure that every client I work with gets A+ customer service, immediate communication, and thorough explanation of policy options. Even though it was a fast turn around, I was happy to help this lovely couple get affordable coverage at the level they needed. This is why I truly love my career, and this is why I do what I do.
